Is it Loving?
~The Great Council of the Grandmothers
“The election in America created more fear and division than ever before, Grandmothers,” I said as I stood before them. “People are calling for ‘new’ political systems, wanting to deport people, and lock some of them up. They’re basically saying ’The end justifies the means’—and these words were used by Hitler and Stalin! When people use this sort of language, Grandmothers, how can we know what’s true?”
The Grandmothers just looked at me, and as I watched them watching me, I saw that they were breathing deep and slow. So I slowed my breath too, and when I did, I began to calm down. “Go slow,” they said. “The world is in mass confusion and people are lost. Don’t follow lost people, but wait. Wait and watch.”
I listened to them and nodded ‘yes.’ I would slow down and wait. Just being with the Grandmothers was good for me, and now they stood up and began to gesture like orchestra conductors. Directing me to slow my breathing even more, their hands winged back and forth before me and, following their movements, I breathed with them…slowing down still more. Then they spoke.
“Is it loving?” they asked, and tilted their heads while they studied me. I looked at them with a question in my eyes but “Is it loving?” they repeated, and my breath slowed further. I thought about it. ‘Is it loving?’ What do they mean by this? “This is the question for you to ask,” they said. “Ask it of others and ask it of yourself too. It will answer everything. It will show you the truth.”
“There is so much confusion now that many are lost. And the louder they talk,” they said, “the more lost they are. So don’t listen to them, but watch their actions. What do they do? Is it loving?” they asked again. “We’re repeating this so you can hear how simple it is. Hear this question and follow it,” they said. “Is it loving?”
“Don’t be distracted by what some are calling ‘new’ political theories,” they said. “There are NO ‘new’ political theories. The same old ones are being recycled again—just given different names,” they said. “ But they are always the same,” they said. “Political theories are used to control life,” they said, grimacing, “to attempt to play God.”
“Long ago a great teacher said, ‘By their fruits shall ye know them.’ So look to the fruits,” the Grandmothers said. “Look at what people do. Watch how they behave. Then ask yourself, ‘Is it loving?’ That is how you will find the truth.”
